Events hosted in Atlantic City have a significant economic and social impact. Among the most notable and historic of these is the Atlantic City Marathon, held every October. As the nation’s third oldest marathon, it offers participants and spectators the unique experience of running along the scenic oceanfront boardwalk.

Part of the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series, the Marathon is one of three signature races that collectively drew 7,000 total runners in 2024:

  • 3,600 participants in the Atlantic City Marathon.
  • 2,400 participants in the April Fools Half Marathon.
  • 1,000 participants in the Bungalow Beach Boardwalk Run.

Here’s how the event brought runners, volunteers, and the community together while boosting the local economy and giving back.

Economic Boost to Local Businesses

During the weekend of October 18–22, 2024, Atlantic City welcomed thousands of runners and spectators for the Atlantic City Marathon providing a substantial economic boost to local hotels, restaurants, and businesses. Increased occupancy rates at hotels and higher revenues for many establishments reflected the positive impact of the event.

The AC Marathon worked with several local hotels to offer room blocks for those visiting during the event. Some of the properties included Resorts Casino Hotel, Tropicana Atlantic City, and the Courtyard Atlantic City Beach Block, all of which offered special nightly rates for our marathon guests.

The event also encouraged participants to explore the city through the Show Me Your Badge initiative, or in this case, Show Me Your Bib, which offered exclusive discounts to race guests. Visitors were able to enjoy deals such as 20% off Renault Winery Resort, 10% off Perry’s Pizza, and free admission to Boogie Nights at Tropicana. These partnerships not only enhanced the visitor experience but also supported local businesses throughout the marathon weekend.

Community Engagement & Volunteerism

The success of the Atlantic City Marathon is made possible by the incredible support of local volunteers, sponsors, and businesses. Across all events in the Atlantic City Marathon Race Series, more than 2,000 volunteers annually contribute their time and energy to assist with water stations, packet pick-up, handing out medals, and other race logistics. Their dedication ensures the events run smoothly and leave a lasting positive impact on participants.

This year’s marathon highlighted one significant initiative: the Sneaker Drive. The Atlantic City Marathon Race Series and AtlantiCare partnered with Community Recycling and Stand Up 2 Cancer to collect gently used sneakers during the Runner Expo on October 18 and 19 at Bally’s Atlantic City. Over 400 pairs of running, casual, dress, adult, and children’s shoes were donated by participants. These shoes were distributed to communities in need both locally in Atlantic County and worldwide, helping to reduce waste and support underserved populations while keeping shoes out of landfills.

Sustainability at the Forefront

The Atlantic City Marathon remains committed to reducing its environmental impact by implementing practical, eco-friendly initiatives throughout the event. Hydration stations along the course utilized recyclable waxed paper cups to help minimize waste. Looking ahead to 2025, the Atlantic City Marathon team is actively exploring additional sustainable practices, such as introducing reusable cups at hydration stations, partnering with local recycling agencies to manage event waste, and collaborating with compounding companies to compost items like banana peels at the finish line.

Atlantic City’s Ongoing Legacy

With its stunning oceanfront views, vibrant entertainment, and world-class hospitality, Atlantic City continues to shine as a premier destination for sporting events. The success of the 2024 Atlantic City Marathon reaffirms the city’s ability to host major events that bring economic, social, and environmental benefits to the community. As we close out another exciting year, Atlantic City eagerly looks forward to hosting even more events in 2025 and continuing to build on this legacy.
